WARFARE, WEAPONRY & JANISSARIES
JANISSARIES, SIEGE GUNS & VIENNA’S TURNING POINT
Ottoman warfare combined disciplined Janissaries, siege artillery, trench lines and master miners. These methods brought the empire to the walls of Europe’s greatest fortresses. On this day in 1683, the siege of Vienna ended in disaster when a Christian relief force broke the Ottoman lines and sent Kara Mustafa Pasha’s army into retreat. The defeat marked a major turning point in Ottoman expansion into Central Europe.
