In this heartfelt sohbet, Ayberk Efendi reminds us that every seeker sets out on a journey because there is a direction—a purpose—to be fulfilled. The teaching begins with a simple image: a traveler who has left home for a destination that is not yet visible, but whose path is nonetheless defined by intention and guidance.
Looking Straight Ahead
Ayberk Efendi emphasizes the central counsel of “look straight ahead.” He warns against turning our gaze sideways, backward, or upward, where countless whispers and distractions arise from every direction. By fixing our eyes on the intended destination, we remain aligned with the Qur’anic verses, prophetic traditions, and wise nasihat that act as a map. These sources point out cliffs, pits, bandits, and other obstacles, helping the traveler stay on the true route.
The Role of Intention
Intention (niyet) is presented as the engine of the journey. Even when the road appears clear, a wavering or impure intention can cause one to stray from the prescribed track. Ayberk Efendi explains that the tarikat itself is “the way to Allah,” and those who enter it become travelers—not yet mürid (one who has already attained his wish). True müridship arises only when the goal is reached; until then, steadfastness and a pure niyet keep us moving forward.
The Guide on the Path
The sohbet also highlights the indispensable role of the guide (rehber). This mentor knows where the abyss lies, where the traps are set, and how to open safe passages. Following the guide’s instructions prevents us from taking tempting shortcuts that ultimately cut off the true way. Ayberk Efendi recalls Şeyh Efendi’s timeless advice: “Give a path, open a way, or withdraw.” In practice this means we either provide support, clear obstacles for others, or step aside when we cannot serve.
Living the Teaching
To embody these teachings, we are invited to keep our eyes fixed forward, nurture a sincere intention, and remain obedient to the guidance that leads us toward the ultimate goal. The journey is continuous; each step taken with awareness brings us nearer to Allah’s presence.
We encourage you to deepen this practice within our community—whether by joining our live gatherings for collective zikr and study, or by exploring the library for further reflections on the path.
