In this heartfelt teaching we are invited to pause and examine the very reason for our existence. The Almighty has created each of us with honor (şeref) woven into our being. Yet, we often ask ourselves whether that honor remains in our grasp or has slipped away unnoticed. Are we here merely to fill our stomachs, chase fleeting pleasures, and await death? Or are we called to fulfill divine responsibilities, leaving behind deeds that benefit others and draw prayers after we have gone?
The discourse draws a vivid contrast between two ways of living. One path is transient: satisfying appetite, indulging in comfort, and departing without having contributed lasting good. The other is purposeful: embracing our ilahi görevler—the divine tasks entrusted to us—and creating works that ripple outward, earning the gratitude and supplications of those we have helped.
If we neglect these human values, the teaching warns that we become like a word (“zayn”) stripped of merit—a presence that brings no benefit to ourselves, to those around us, or even to the world. Such a life may cause no harm, but it also fails to honor the purpose for which we were created. Shakespeare’s famous opening line is invoked to illustrate how hollow praise—“İyi ki varsın” (“It’s good you exist”)—can become when detached from genuine usefulness.
The teaching urges us to conduct an honest inventory of our lives. We are asked to ask ourselves whether the honor bestowed upon us still rests in our hands, whether we are merely existing for personal gratification, or striving toward a higher purpose that serves others. Each action can be measured by its contribution: does it add value (faydalı) or become an unnecessary burden (zarar)?
By confronting these questions, we align ourselves with the true spirit of the Sufi path—transforming egoic cravings into self‑less service and thereby honoring the Creator’s intention for us.
