On the evening of 12 March 2016 the Royal Ottoman Society welcomed a gathering of seekers, students and friends to the historic Theater im Pfalzbau in Ludwigshafen for the ninth installment of its celebrated Ottoman Sufi Night series. The night was led by Sheikh Bahauddin Adil, whose presence has become a familiar and beloved thread throughout the Society’s ongoing program of spiritual sohbet and dhikr.
A setting of reverence and history
The Pfalzbau, with its vaulted ceilings and warm wooden seats, provided an intimate backdrop for the evening’s program. As attendees took their places, the soft glow of lanterns evoked the ambience of traditional Ottoman lodges, reminding everyone that they were entering a space where heart‑centered remembrance has flourished for centuries. The Royal Ottoman Society’s emblem—an elegant tughra intertwined with a rose of mystic symbolism—was displayed on the stage, underscoring the continuity between historical heritage and contemporary practice.
Sheikh Bahauddin’s guidance
Sheikh Bahauddin opened the gathering with a short invocation, inviting the audience to set aside worldly concerns and turn inward. He then guided participants through a series of dhikr (remembrance) verses, drawing on classic Sufi poetry that celebrates the divine love that permeates all creation. While each night’s program varies, the core intention remains consistent: to awaken the heart, soften the ego, and foster an environment where the seeker can experience the subtle presence of the Nur (light) within.
Throughout the evening, Sheikh Bahauddin offered brief reflections on timeless themes—patience on the path, the importance of sincere intention (niyyah), and the transformative power of collective prayer. Listeners responded with gentle murmurs of affirmation, creating a rhythmic flow that echoed the ancient tradition of Sema (spiritual listening). Though the talk was concise, its resonance lingered, encouraging participants to carry the night’s insights into their daily lives.
Community and continuity
The Ottoman Sufi Night series has become more than a single event; it is a living thread that weaves together history, spirituality, and community in Ludwigshafen. Part 9 continued this legacy, reinforcing the Society’s mission to provide an accessible space for those drawn to Sufi wisdom while honoring the rich cultural tapestry of the Ottoman era.
