The Royal Ottoman Society recently gathered in the cultural courtyard of Ludwigshafen for a vivid celebration of our shared heritage. Sheikh Bahauddin Efendi, son and successor of Seyh Nazım Hz., joined forces with Ayberk Efendi to present an authentic mehter (Ottoman military band) performance. The resonant beats of the davul and the bright cries of the zurna filled the open air, transporting listeners back to the cadence that once accompanied Ottoman soldiers into battle.
Beyond the powerful rhythms, the gathering became a living prayer. Sheikh Bahauddin Efendi briefly explained the historical and spiritual meanings embedded in each piece, while Ayberk Efendi guided participants to feel the music as an expression of unity under the Divine. The reverberations invited contemplation and gratitude for the enduring legacy that continues to inspire our community.
For those who wish to deepen their understanding of mehter tradition and other aspects of Ottoman spiritual culture, we invite you to explore the Society’s digital library: https://royalottomans.com/kutuphane.
