WARFARE, WEAPONRY & JANISSARIES
Did You Know?
The March and the Counterblow
Ottoman warfare relied on mobility, disciplined infantry, provincial cavalry, artillery, and logistics that could move armies across vast frontiers. Yet not every campaign ended in triumph. On this day in 1688, Ottoman forces faced the Habsburgs at Derventa during the Great Turkish War. The clash ended badly for the Ottomans and revealed how quickly momentum could shift when exhausted armies met a determined enemy on difficult ground.
WAR MACHINE
Janissaries, sipahis, artillery, scouts, and supply lines gave the Ottoman army its famous staying power.
TODAY IN HISTORY – 1688
