Mapping an Empire at Suleiman’s Sunset
Ottoman science embraced astronomy, navigation, cartography, and practical mathematics that supported trade, travel, and war. Mapmakers and pilots helped the empire imagine space at scale. On this day in 1566, Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent died during the siege of Szigetvar. His passing closed a golden age, yet the administrative and scientific systems fostered under his reign helped the empire continue governing a vast world long after the sultan himself was gone.
