COURT DIPLOMACY & THE ERTUGRUL TRAGEDY
Court life was inseparable from diplomacy. Receptions, gift exchanges and ceremonial etiquette projected Ottoman prestige far beyond the palace walls. On this day in 1890, the frigate Ertugrul was wrecked off Japan while returning from an imperial mission, turning a diplomatic voyage into tragedy. The disaster, and the Japanese rescue efforts that followed, left a lasting emotional bond between Ottoman and Japanese memory.
PALACE DIPLOMACY:
Ceremonial visits and imperial gifts were tools of friendship, prestige and soft power.
TODAY IN HISTORY – 1890:
The Ottoman frigate Ertugrul sank after departing Japan. More than five hundred sailors died, but the tragedy became a cornerstone of Turkish-Japanese goodwill.
