OTTOMAN ARMS & THE OPENING OF MEGIDDO
Ottoman warfare in the First World War mixed old endurance with new dangers: machine guns, aircraft, telephones and fast cavalry exploitation. On this day in 1918, the Battle of Megiddo began in Palestine, where Allied attacks smashed Ottoman lines and opened one of the final great disasters of the war. It was a campaign that showed how quickly modern operations could unravel a tired imperial army.
