In a lively gathering at our Ludwigshafen centre, the son of Sheikh Nazim Hz—Sheikh Mehmed Efendi, also his appointed khalifa—and Ayberk Efendi presented an inspiring Mehter (Ottoman Janissary) band demonstration. The rhythmic cadence of drums, cymbals and zurna filled the hall, echoing the martial spirit that once accompanied Ottoman sultans into battle and now accompanies seekers on their inner journey.
The performance was more than a musical showcase; it was a living reminder of how the Sufi path intertwines with the cultural heritage of our ancestors. As the deep thump of the timpani resonated, Sheikh Mehmed Efendi offered brief reflections on the role of sound in spiritual practice—how the steady beat can become a form of dhikr (remembrance) that steadies the heart and aligns it with divine presence. Ayberk Efendi highlighted the historical significance of Mehter music as a bridge between the martial vigor of the empire and the contemplative depth of Sufism, illustrating how both disciplines aim toward unity and service.
