Ottoman engineering was tested not only in grand monuments but also in roads, passes, redoubts, and military infrastructure. On October 8, 1912, Montenegro declared war on the Ottoman Empire, beginning the First Balkan War. In such conflicts, fortifications and transport networks mattered immensely. The empire’s engineers had to support troops across rugged terrain, proving that architecture could be both beautiful and brutally strategic.
