Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han remains one of the most remarkable figures of the late Ottoman era, remembered not only for his leadership during a challenging period, but also for his compassion towards those under his care. Throughout his reign, he supported charitable works, educational projects, and public services, reflecting his belief that a ruler’s duty was to serve the people entrusted to his care. His influence can be seen not only in the political history of the Ottoman Empire, but also in the lives of the many people who benefited from his generosity and dedication to serving society.
Who Was Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han?
Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han was the 34th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the 113th Islamic Caliph, ruling from 1876 until 1909. Born on 21 September 1842 in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), he was the son of Sultan Abdülmecid I and Tirimüjgan Kadın Efendi.
He ascended to the throne at a time when the Ottoman Empire was experiencing major political and social changes. During his thirty-three-year reign, he faced numerous challenges while also overseeing developments in education, healthcare, communication, and public works.
Known for his intelligence, patience, and careful approach to leadership, Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han ruled for more than three decades during one of the most difficult periods in Ottoman history.
Alongside his responsibilities as a statesman, Abdülhamid Han was known for his personal interest in charitable projects and the welfare of society. He believed that a ruler carried a responsibility towards the people under his care, a principle reflected in the many institutions and initiatives supported during his reign.
The Character Behind the Throne
Beyond his role as Sultan, Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han was known for his thoughtful and careful nature. He was a ruler who valued patience, discipline, and attention to detail, often taking a personal interest in matters that affected the lives of those around him.
His character was reflected in the way he approached leadership and public service. Rather than seeing the throne as a symbol of privilege, he viewed it as a position that carried duties and obligations. This sense of responsibility influenced many of the charitable works and initiatives connected to his reign, leaving behind a lasting impact that reached far beyond his own lifetime .
Compassion Within the Palace Walls
Before his generosity reached the wider society of the Ottoman Empire, it was reflected in the way Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han treated those around him. Despite the grandeur associated with the Ottoman court, he was known for his modest and disciplined personal life, placing importance on responsibility rather than luxury.
Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han was widely regarded as a disciplined and considerate ruler who treated those around him with respect. This outlook was reflected in his approach to leadership, where discipline was closely associated with courtesy and a strong sense of responsibility.
This personal approach to those closest to him reflected a wider principle that guided his life: that authority should be accompanied by mercy. The same sense of responsibility he showed within the palace would later be seen in his efforts to support communities throughout the empire.
Caring for the People of the Empire
Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han’s concern for society was reflected through many charitable and public initiatives carried out during his reign. His support extended to different communities across the Ottoman Empire, with assistance directed towards those facing hardship, including the poor, orphans, students, and families affected by difficult circumstances.
One example of this wider approach to charity was the support given to communities regardless of religious background. During his reign, the Ottoman government also provided aid to non-Muslim communities during important occasions and times of need, demonstrating that public welfare extended to all subjects of the empire.
Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han also supported relief efforts following disasters and hardships, aiding through state institutions and charitable networks. These actions reflected his belief that the wellbeing of the people was a responsibility of leadership and that those in need should receive support.
Rather than limiting his generosity to individual acts of charity, Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han invested in schools, hospitals, and public institutions that would continue serving society for generations.
Compassion Towards Animals
The compassion associated with Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han was not limited to people alone. Within Islamic tradition, mercy extends to all of Allah’s creation, and kindness towards animals is considered a reflection of a person’s character and faith.
While specific personal incidents involving Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han and animals are difficult to verify, the values of mercy and care towards animals were deeply rooted in Ottoman and Islamic tradition. Across Ottoman society, caring for animals, especially providing food and water for stray animals, was often encouraged as a charitable and virtuous act.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that even a small act of kindness towards an animal could become a means of forgiveness. In an authentic hadith, he mentioned the story of a person who gave water to a thirsty dog, and Allah forgave that person because of this act of mercy.
At the same time, the Prophet ﷺ warned against cruelty towards animals. He mentioned a woman who was punished because she imprisoned a cat, neither feeding it nor allowing it to find food. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A woman was punished because of a cat which she had kept locked up until it died. She did not feed it, nor did she let it go free to eat the insects of the earth.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 2365; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, 2242)
These teachings shaped the values of Muslim societies, including the Ottoman Empire, where caring for animals was often seen as a charitable and noble act. The tradition of providing food, water, and care for animals reflected the wider Islamic principle that mercy should extend to all living creatures.
A Legacy of Service
One of the greatest reflections of Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han’s vision was his support for institutions designed to benefit society for generations. Rather than focusing only on temporary acts of charity, many of the projects established during his reign aimed to provide lasting services in areas such as healthcare, care for the vulnerable, and public welfare.
One notable example is Darülaceze, which was established in Istanbul in 1895 during Abdülhamid Han’s reign. Created to provide care for the elderly, orphans, and those without support, the institution represented the idea that society had a responsibility to protect its most vulnerable members. Darülaceze continues to operate today, carrying on its original mission of providing care and support.
Another important institution from his era is Hamidiye Etfal Hospital, established in 1899 in Istanbul as a children’s hospital. It was created to provide healthcare for children and reflected Abdülhamid Han’s interest in improving medical services and protecting future generations. Today, the institution continues its work as Şişli Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital.
Another lasting contribution was the establishment of Hamidiye Water in 1902. Developed to provide Istanbul with clean and reliable drinking water, the Hamidiye spring water system became an important public service. The project reflected Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han’s attention to improving daily life for ordinary people, and Hamidiye Water continues to be recognised as one of the enduring works associated with his reign.
These lasting institutions show that Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han’s approach to generosity was not limited to individual acts of kindness. By supporting projects that served society over the long term, he left behind a legacy built on care, service, and the belief that helping others could continue beyond one lifetime.
A Legacy Built to Last
Sultan II. Abdülhamid Han’s legacy cannot be measured solely by the political events of his reign. It is also reflected in the compassion he showed towards those under his care, the charitable institutions he supported, and the lasting works that continue to benefit society today. Whether through caring for the vulnerable, investing in education and healthcare, or upholding the Islamic values of mercy and service, he demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in responsibility.
More than a century after his reign, his example continues to remind us that a ruler’s greatest achievement is not only found in the power they possess, but in the lives they touch. His legacy of compassion and generosity remains a testament to the enduring impact of sincere service, mercy, and a commitment to the wellbeing of others.
