In a recent gathering at our Ludwigshafen headquarters, we welcomed Sheikh Muhammed Er Rabbani for an open‑hearted interview. Recorded on June 1, 2024, the conversation turned to two questions that echo through many hearts today: the link between Imam Mahdi and the Ottoman legacy, and how believers can respond when oppression seems overwhelming.
The Ottoman Empire and the Coming of Imam Mahdi
Sheikh Muhammed Er Rabbani reminded us of the prophetic tradition that foretells a period of tyranny followed by the emergence of the promised Mahdi. He explained that, according to this tradition, the Ottoman dynasty historically served as custodians of the Caliphate—the “Khalifa” – and therefore carried forward symbols and gifts from the Prophet ﷺ that will be passed on to Imam Mahdi when he appears.
“The Ottoman Empire was blessed by the Prophet ﷺ. The Khalifa who remained within the Ottoman realm preserved the heritage that, Insha‑Allah, Mahdi will inherit—his banner, the prophetic relics, and the spiritual authority that accompany him.”
This connection is not a claim of political restoration but a recognition of an enduring spiritual lineage. The Sheikh emphasized that the Ottoman legacy serves as a sign of continuity: a bridge between past revelation and the future guidance that Mahdi will bring.
Acting with Faith Amidst Tyranny
When asked what believers can do in times marked by “zulm” (oppression) and apparent helplessness, Sheikh Muhammed Er Rabbani offered a balanced approach rooted in patience and compassionate action:
- Patience and Trust – The Prophet ﷺ taught that the Ummah should remain calm, awaiting divine assistance rather than rushing into rash measures that might cause greater harm.
- Support the Oppressed – While refraining from grand political schemes, believers are encouraged to provide tangible aid—food, shelter, and moral support—to those who suffer injustice.
- Discernment – Satan seeks to lure people into actions that seem beneficial but ultimately deepen suffering. We must therefore assess each effort carefully, ensuring it truly serves the collective good.
The Sheikh cautioned against both passive resignation and impulsive activism. “Sometimes a single act of kindness can ripple outward, helping thousands,” he said, yet also warned that misguided initiatives may unintentionally empower tyranny.
