In this recent teaching, Ayberk Efendi addressed a growing confusion within our community concerning the rightful use of the honorific “Mevlana.” While the term appears in everyday conversation across many cultures, its spiritual weight demands careful handling, especially within the Naqshbandi‑wazirî tradition that guides the Royal Ottoman Society.
Understanding the Sacred Context
We began by reminding everyone that “Mevlana” is more than a polite title; it denotes a specific spiritual station entrusted only by divine permission and the explicit approval of the Prophet’s and Allah’s will. Historically, this honor has been reserved for a limited line of saints whose souls have been illuminated through rigorous training and authentic transmission.
Within our lineage, two figures occupy this distinguished place:
- Sheikh Nazım el‑Hakkâni – the great Naqshbandi master who directly preceded our current spiritual guide.
- Sheikh Muḥammad ʿĀdile Rabbānī – the present head of our tariqa, whose teachings and guidance are the living source of our path.
Only these individuals may be invoked with the title “Mevlana” in a formal, ritual context. Adding other names—whether beloved teachers or respected companions—to the same honorific without explicit permission disrupts the golden chain (silsila) that safeguards the integrity of the order. Ayberk Efendi recounted a recent gathering where a participant unintentionally placed an additional name under the “Mevlana” banner, leading to discomfort among brothers and sisters. The incident highlighted how easily well‑intentioned reverence can become a source of division when the proper protocol is overlooked.
Our Commitment to Unity
The Society’s response is rooted in love, patience, and mutual responsibility:
- Speak and listen with humility. If a mistake occurs, we address it gently, correct the phrasing, and reaffirm the rightful usage.
- Protect the sanctity of the title. No one may elevate another person above or beside our Sheikh without the explicit sanction of divine authority.
- Foster brotherhood. We reject any seed of envy or resentment; instead, we nurture a spirit of collective trust and affection.
By adhering to these principles, we ensure that the light of Mevlana – the embodiment of love, wisdom, and service – continues to guide us toward the promised “golden age” where peace, harmony, and sincere companionship flourish.
