In this teaching we are reminded that the Most High fashioned every creation upon a precise scale. Nothing exists without measure; Allah‑the‑Measurer set both the balance and the unit for all that is seen and unseen. Consequently, every word we utter and every step we take will be weighed on the Divine Scale. When a statement is heavy it settles firmly, while a light one drifts like breath on wind—illustrating how our deeds can either anchor us in purpose or leave us weightless.
The tradition of counting steps serves as a vivid metaphor for spiritual awareness. The renowned traveler Evliya Çelebi recorded the exact number of paces around fortresses and along riverbanks, demonstrating that even the smallest motions are accounted for. Likewise, we are invited to tally our inner journeys: how many acts of service we have performed, how truthfully we have spoken, and whether we have moved forward in harmony with Allah’s guidance. On the Day of Judgment the Divine Accountant will ask why we took five steps beyond what was required or fell three short of the intended path, emphasizing that intention matters as much as quantity.
Every ordinary transaction—whether weighing iron, a nail, or a loaf of bread—mirrors this cosmic principle. If the world measures metal and grain, it also measures our hearts. Therefore we must avoid excess, weigh each word before speaking, and align every action with the divine order so that our deeds become light enough to uplift us yet substantial enough to leave a lasting imprint of good.
May Allah guide us to live with such mindful balance. For further reflection and resources, explore our Library or join the community for live gatherings at Live meetings.
