In this heartfelt teaching, we are reminded that every utterance carries a hidden gravity. The speaker likens words to precious metals and stones—diamond‑bright truth, copper with modest merit, iron forged by discipline, and tin or clay that dissolve into emptiness. By categorising speech in this way, the message urges us to treat each statement as a treasure that can either uplift souls or spread decay.
The Spectrum of Speech
The teaching describes several layers of verbal value:
- Diamond‑like words – flawless, enduring truths that remain valuable for eternity.
- Copper and iron words – respectable statements that serve their purpose when used wisely.
- Tin or clay words – fleeting, insincere remarks that quickly lose weight and relevance.
These distinctions are not merely poetic; they echo the Sufi principle that language is a conduit of divine intent. When we speak from the heart, our words become “hak söz” (true words), formed from the very letters of Allah’s boundless treasury. Such speech withstands the judgment of the Hereafter, taking shape and bearing witness for us.
Why Words Carry Consequence
According to the teaching, careless talk acts like an invisible virus, infecting minds and spirits. It creates a “world of noise” where 99 % of utterances are empty, producing only superficial chatter that offers no lasting benefit. In contrast, words anchored in truth become tangible: they can be visualised, felt, and will manifest on the Day of Resurrection.
The speaker warns us to pause before speaking—“think eight times, speak once”—mirroring the ancestral wisdom of our forebears. This practice guards against the spread of “worldly” chatter that dissolves like illusion.
Training Our Tongue
Just as a boxer conditions his body, we are encouraged to train our speech. The teaching proposes several methods:
- Mirror practice – observing oneself while speaking, noting tone and intention.
- Dialogue with a trusted companion – engaging in honest conversation that demands patience and commitment.
- Deliberate silence – allowing space for contemplation before any word leaves the mouth.
Through such disciplined rehearsal, we can ensure that every statement carries weight, meaning, dignity, and wisdom—transforming “garbage” into golden speech.
