On the evening of 12 March 2016, the Royal Ottoman Society gathered in the historic Pfalzbau theater of Ludwigshafen for a remarkable celebration of Ottoman heritage and Sufi spirituality. The second part of “Mehter Ottoman Sufi Night,” led by Sheikh Bahauddin Adil, continued the fusion of powerful Mehter drums with the gentle rhythms of Sufi chant, creating an atmosphere that felt both ancient and deeply present.
The performance opened with the resonant roar of the Janissary band—its kettledrums, cymbals, and zurna weaving a tapestry of sound that echoed the grandeur of the Ottoman Empire’s military traditions. As the music swelled, Sheikh Bahauddin guided the audience into a state of contemplative devotion, inviting participants to join in the dhikr (remembrance) while the Mehter ensemble provided an ever‑present pulse. The juxtaposition of martial vigor and spiritual serenity reminded us that true strength arises from surrender to the Divine.
