On March 12 2016 the Royal Ottoman Society gathered in the historic Theater im Pfalzbau, Ludwigshafen, for the fourth evening of its “Zikir‑Dhikr Ottoman Sufi Night” series. Guided by Sheikh Bahauddin Adil, participants entered a space where the rhythmic chanting of divine names (dhikr) merged with the timeless ambience of Ottoman spirituality.
The night unfolded as a seamless flow of heartfelt remembrance. As the lights dimmed, Sheikh Bahauddin began the evening with a gentle invocation, inviting everyone to turn their focus inward. The echo of his voice resonated through the hall, prompting a collective breathing that softened the bustle of daily life. One by one, familiar phrases—Allâh‑u Akbar, Al‑Hamdulillâh, La ilahe illa Allah—were recited in measured cadence, each syllable weaving a thread of unity among the gathered souls.
What makes a Zikir night distinct is not merely the repetition of sacred words but the intention behind them. Sheikh Bahauddin reminded us that dhikr is an act of surrender: “When we remember Allah with sincerity, our hearts become mirrors reflecting His light.” The audience responded with increasing fervor, their voices rising and falling like waves on a calm sea, creating an atmosphere where inner silence co‑existed with audible devotion.
Beyond the chants, the evening featured short reflections on Ottoman Sufi heritage. Sheikh Bahauddin highlighted how the practice of dhikr was cultivated in the courts of the empire, serving both as personal purification and communal bonding. He narrated anecdotes about historic figures who used dhikr to navigate moments of trial, drawing parallels to modern challenges faced by seekers today.
The night concluded with a collective supplication for peace, health, and guidance—both for those present and for the broader community. As attendees departed, many expressed how the evening had rekindled their spiritual rhythm, offering a renewed sense of purpose anchored in the Ottoman Sufi tradition.
