On June 1, 2024 the Royal Ottoman Society gathered at its headquarters in Ludwigshafen for a heartfelt interview with Sheikh Mehmed Er Rabbani. The conversation turned to two pressing questions that many of us carry: the prophetic link between Imam Mahdi and the Ottoman legacy, and how believers can respond when tyranny seems overwhelming.
The Ottoman Empire and the Awaited Mahdi
Sheikh Mehmed explained that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ foretold a time after “the tyrants” when Imam Mahdi would appear. In this prophetic framework the Ottoman dynasty is seen as part of the lineage entrusted with the khalifa (spiritual authority) that will ultimately hand over its blessed heritage to the Mahdi. The Sultanate, therefore, is not merely a political chapter but a custodial one: the symbols, banners and spiritual endowments preserved by the Ottomans are expected to be transferred to the Mahdi when he rises. This connection, Sheikh Mehmed emphasized, reinforces why the Ottoman era remains “blessed from the Prophet ﷺ” even after its earthly decline.
Responding to Tyranny in These Final Days
When asked what a believer can do amid widespread oppression (zulm), Sheikh Mehmed reminded us of the prophetic guidance to exercise patience and await divine assistance. Yet he also highlighted concrete, compassionate action: feeding the hungry, supporting those who are oppressed, and offering tangible help wherever possible. Such deeds do not contradict the call for quiet perseverance; rather, they embody the spirit of service while we wait for Allah’s ultimate rescue.
He warned against being swept into schemes that seem beneficial but later cause greater harm—traps set by shaitān. The safest path is to stay grounded in sincere intention, helping others without seeking personal glory or unwarranted political involvement. In this way, each small act of kindness becomes a ripple that sustains the community until the promised salvation arrives.
