On Saturday, 23 March 2019, the Royal Ottoman Society opened its doors in Ludwigshafen for a special gathering that blended history, music, and heartfelt conversation. At 19:30 we welcomed one of today’s most distinguished historians, Prof. Dr. Ebubekir Sofuoğlu, to share his deep‑drawn insights into the authentic narrative of the Turkish people—an account that has been obscured for over a century.
A Feast of History and Sound
Prof. Dr. Sofuoğlu, renowned for his scholarly rigor, delivered what can only be described as a “historical banquet.” He illuminated forgotten chapters of Ottoman heritage, offering our community a clearer understanding of the past that shapes our present spiritual journey. His eloquence—marked by nobility, resolve, courage, and masterful oratory—captivated everyone in attendance.
The evening’s atmosphere was further enriched by the resonant beats of our own mehter band and the soaring voices of an ilahi choir. Their performances created a living bridge between the scholarly discourse and the living tradition of Ottoman music, reminding us that history is not merely read but also heard and felt.
Spiritual Reflections and Warm Fellowship
Joining the program, theologian and psychologist Mehmet Küçük offered brief reflections that wove together faith, psychology, and our shared heritage. After the formal presentations, we moved to the Society’s café where Prof. Dr. Maranki served authentic Ottoman coffee—a ritual that sparked informal sohbet among participants. The conversation continued late into the night, fostering connections rooted in both intellectual curiosity and spiritual kinship.
