On a warm early‑summer evening in Berlin, members of the Royal Ottoman Society gathered together for a “Großer Konversationsabend” (grand conversation night) hosted by the Ottoman Sufi Center. The event, held on 4 June 2016, brought together seekers from across the city to share reflections on the Sufi path, Ottoman cultural heritage, and the timeless teachings that unite both.
The atmosphere was one of quiet anticipation as the hall filled with the soft murmur of conversation. Traditional Ottoman melodies whispered through the space, creating a gentle backdrop for the evening’s sohbet. Participants settled onto low cushions and carpets, forming circles that encouraged eye‑contact and open dialogue. In true Sufi fashion, the gathering emphasized listening as much as speaking; each voice was honored, each story treated as a seed of wisdom.
Although the program did not follow a formal lecture format, several respected members—among them long‑time guides of our community—offered brief reflections on topics such as the importance of humility (tevazu) in daily life, the role of dhikr (remembrance) in strengthening inner resolve, and how Ottoman history can inspire contemporary spiritual practice. Their words sparked spontaneous discussions about balancing modern responsibilities with the yearning for a deeper connection to the Divine.
Beyond the teachings themselves, the evening served as a reminder of the Society’s commitment to fostering a living community rooted in both spirituality and cultural identity. Attendees exchanged contact information, discussed upcoming workshops, and planned future pilgrimages to historic sites across Turkey and the former Ottoman lands. The sense of belonging that emerged reinforced the idea that our tradition thrives when shared openly, with love and mutual respect.
As the night drew to a close, the group gathered for a final collective dhikr, allowing the vibrations of remembrance to linger in the hearts of all present. It was a fitting conclusion—one that underscored how each gathering, whether intimate or grand, becomes a step on the shared journey toward inner illumination.
