On a crisp winter morning in 2016, the Royal Ottoman Society welcomed Sheikh Bahauddin Adil Efendi to our humble hall in Ludwigshafen. The gathering was framed by Ayberk Efendi, who introduced the occasion with reverence and a touch of Ottoman hospitality. Attendees—long‑time members, seekers of Sufi wisdom, and curious locals—settled into the warm atmosphere as the Sheikh prepared to unveil his latest work, “Under the Wings of the Sultan 2.”
The new volume continues the journey begun in the first edition, tracing the intertwining paths of Ottoman political authority and spiritual practice. Sheikh Bahauddin Efendi weaves together archival anecdotes, poetry from the ashâb‑i Badr, and reflections on how the sultanic patronage nurtured the flourishing of Sufi orders across centuries. Readers are invited to contemplate the delicate balance between worldly responsibility and inner purification—a theme that resonates deeply with our own community’s pursuit of love (maḥabba) and service (khidma).
During the brief presentation, the Sheikh highlighted three core insights from his manuscript:
- The Sultan as a Spiritual Protector – Historically, many sultans acted not only as political leaders but also as guardians of the mystical tradition, offering endowments that allowed lodges to thrive.
- Continuity of the Tariqa in Modern Life – The teachings of the early Ottoman saints retain practical relevance, encouraging today’s seekers to embody humility and compassion amidst modern distractions.
- The Power of Narrative – By retelling stories of past masters, we keep their wisdom alive, allowing each generation to draw fresh inspiration from timeless truths.
After the remarks, a modest reception allowed participants to peruse a few copies of the book, exchange reflections, and ask the Sheikh about his research process. The conversation naturally drifted toward the importance of community spaces—like our own society’s library and study circles—in preserving Ottoman heritage for future generations.
