In a recent sohbet recorded at the Lütfüksafen Ottoman Centre, Sheikh Muhammad Adil Efendi addressed the anxieties that many believers feel today—rising wars, global crises, and the question of whether we are already in the core of the End Times. Drawing from the Sufi tradition and Ottoman heritage, he offered a perspective rooted in trust in Allah, active hope, and spiritual steadiness.
The Reality of Conflict
Sheikh Adil Efendi acknowledged that the surge of wars and humanitarian distress is a genuine source of fear. He reminded us that conflict has accompanied humanity since its creation: “Since Allah placed mankind on this earth, peoples have contested one another.” In this view, wars are not random catastrophes but part of a divine test that ultimately serves a purpose in the unfolding of history. Recognising this helps believers move from panic to a measured understanding of the role of hardship.
Trust in Allah as the Sole Refuge
When asked how believers should respond to pervasive panic, the Sheikh emphasized absolute reliance on Allah. “There is no refuge except Allah; there is no place to flee,” he said. True iman shields the heart from the dread of death (ecel) and from the noise of worldly turmoil. This reliance is not passive resignation; it is an active, spiritually grounded steadiness that keeps worship, work, and service alive while trusting that Allah will provide sustenance and protection.
Signs of the End Times
The Sheikh confirmed that the signs traditionally associated with the “göbeği” (the core) of the End Times are manifest today: moral decline, the spread of falsehood, and the intensifying conflicts across continents. Yet he cautioned against speculation that distracts from sincere devotion. The focus, he advised, should remain on strengthening one’s relationship with the Divine rather than obsessing over timelines.
Hope in Imam Mahdi and the Return of Prophet Isa
Belief in Imam Mahdi is, according to Sheikh Adil Efendi, a source of active hope, not a reason for inactivity. “Mahdi’s arrival does not mean we should sit idle; rather, we must continue our duties—prayer, work, service—while preparing our hearts.” Similarly, the awaited return of Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) is understood in the Ottoman‑Sufi tradition as a decisive act against the Dajjal, reaffirming the ultimate triumph of truth. Both figures inspire believers to combine patient waiting with diligent effort.
Guarding Against Misinformation
In an era saturated with rumors and conspiracies, the Sheikh urged discernment. He recommended turning to authentic sources—knowledgeable teachers, trustworthy companions, and the Qur’an—rather than unverified internet chatter. By anchoring oneself in reliable guidance, the believer preserves spiritual clarity and avoids the anxiety that misinformation breeds.
Guidance for the Youth
Addressing young people who feel hopeless in the face of today’s challenges, Sheikh Adil Efendi offered practical counsel: pursue knowledge, engage in honest labour, and avoid idleness, which he described as “the devil’s playground.” Productive activity, coupled with steadfast faith, transforms anxiety into constructive energy and prepares the younger generation for the responsibilities of the future.
For those seeking a supportive environment to deepen their practice and discuss these matters further, the Royal Ottoman Society offers regular live meetings where the community gathers for zikr, study, and mutual encouragement. More information can be found on our Live meetings page.
May Allah grant us patience, strengthen our trust, and guide us through the signs of the present age.
